How to Refresh Your Toolkit for 2026

Give your garden a proper refresh this April

After a long winter in the Borders it doesn’t take much for fences and decking to start looking tired. Colour fades, timber dries out and the whole garden can feel a bit flat.

The good news is it is a straightforward job to put right. With the right preparation and products you can completely transform the space in a weekend.

Here is how we would approach it.

Start with the right product

Before you begin it is worth choosing the right finish for the job.

Fence paint is ideal if you want solid colour and full coverage, especially on older timber that has seen better days. Ronseal fence paint in 5L is a reliable option that gives good coverage and protection through the seasons.

Wood stain is a good middle ground. It adds colour while still letting the natural grain show through, which works well on newer fences or features.

For decking we would usually recommend a decking oil. It soaks into the timber, protects it from the elements and helps prevent cracking and splitting over time.

Preparation makes the difference

This is the part that is easy to rush but it is what determines how long your finish will last.

Start by clearing away dirt, moss and loose debris. A stiff brush will do the job or a pressure washer if you have one. If there is any sign of algae or mildew treat it before moving on.

Once clean, leave the timber to dry properly. This can take a day or two depending on conditions. Painting onto damp wood will shorten the life of the finish.

It is also worth checking for any loose panels or posts while you are there. If anything needs resetting, postcrete or postmix makes it a quick and solid fix.

Use the right tools

Good tools make the job quicker and the finish better.

You will want a brush for edges and detailed areas and a roller for covering larger sections. A tray or scuttle will keep things moving efficiently.

A mini roller and tray set is ideal for this kind of job and helps you get an even coat across panels and boards.

Pick your moment

Timing matters, especially with our spring weather.

Aim for a dry spell with mild temperatures. Somewhere around ten to twenty degrees is ideal. Overcast conditions are better than strong sunshine which can dry paint too quickly.

Avoid painting if rain is likely or if the timber is still damp. It is always better to wait a day than have to redo the job.

Applying your finish

Once everything is prepped and ready it is a satisfying job to get stuck into.

Work from the top down and follow the grain of the wood. Apply thin even coats rather than trying to cover everything in one go. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.

Take your time and work methodically. Fences are best tackled panel by panel to keep a consistent finish. On decking avoid overloading the boards and watch for any pooling.

Make it last

A little extra care now will save you time later in the season.

Two coats will always give better protection than one. Keeping surfaces clean with the occasional brush down will help maintain the finish.

Decking areas that see a lot of foot traffic may need a light refresh each year but it is far easier than starting again from scratch.
