Getting Your Home Holiday-Ready

October is a magical month here in the South of Scotland. As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold and a crispness fills the air, it's the perfect time to start thinking about preparing your home for the festive season. Whether you're hosting family gatherings, planning a cosy Christmas retreat, or want to infuse some holiday spirit into your living space, now is the time to roll up your sleeves and embark on some DIY and redecorating projects. In this blog, we'll explore a range of creative and practical ideas to get your home holiday-ready, all while maximising your space for comfort and style.

Clean and Prep Your Space

Before you dive into redecorating or bigger DIY projects, it's essential to start with a clean slate. Deep cleaning your home not only makes your festive look shine but also creates a welcoming atmosphere for your guests. Here are some tips:

  1. Begin by removing any unnecessary items and clutter. Donate or store away things you won't need during the holiday season.
  2. Dust surfaces, including shelves, tables, and mantels. Vacuum carpets and upholstery to remove dirt and debris.
  3. Crystal-clear windows allow more natural light to filter in and enhance the overall ambiance. Use the latest products for streak-free results.

Create a Warm and Welcoming Entryway

The entryway is a guests' first impression of your home, so let's start there. To infuse a warm and welcoming vibe, consider these ideas:

  1. Give your front door a fresh coat of paint in a warm, inviting colour like deep red, forest green, or classic black. Don't forget to replace or polish the hardware, such as doorknobs and hinges, for a polished look.
  2. As the days get shorter, ensure your entryway is well-lit. Consider installing outdoor lanterns to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Once everyone is inside, there's an opportunity to create a ‘wow’ moment, especially for frequent visitors to your home.

Cosy Up Your Living Room

Your living room is the heart of holiday gatherings, so make it as cosy and comfortable as possible. Consider creating a focal point within the main room by painting an accent wall. The benefits of this approach are that it is a quick and easy way to refresh the room's look (once the tricky task of picking the perfect colour is done), which can be re-done at a later date to create another new look. Be sure to use protective covers on flooring and masking tape to ensure your new pot of colour stays where it should.

Preparing the Kitchen

Preparing your kitchen before you prepare the food is an excellent way of ensuring everything goes like clockwork on the big day (or days for the social butterflies out there). The kitchen plays a central role during the festive season, so ensure it's ready for action, and this doesn't mean a whole kitchen refurbishment project. Worktops can be replaced, sinks and taps renewed, cupboard hinges swapped...you know, all the little niggles that have been bothering you for months, if not years

DIY Upcycling Furniture

Consider upcycling if you want to refresh your home's furniture for the holidays without breaking the bank. It's a more sustainable and budget-friendly way to give your space a new look.  One way to do this is to pick an older piece of furniture and give it new life by repainting it. Preparation is vital with a project like this, so here are a few tips to consider:

  1. For some furniture, maybe an item with a lot of intricate detail, it is worth considering using a paint stripper to remove as much of the old paint or varnish as possible, remembering to do this in a well-ventilated area that is adequately covered.
  2. Always protect yourself too, with gloves, face masks and goggles.
  3. After this, we recommend sanding items down, using coarse-grained sandpaper to remove the old paint or varnish, followed by smoother grain paper to create the perfect painting surface.
  4. Once this labour-intensive task is complete, wash your item down using an appropriate cleaning product. Leave the item to dry thoroughly before applying an undercoat of paint.
  5. And then, finally, you can apply the new colour, opting for something for festive or even metallic finishes for a touch of elegance.

Atmospheric Lighting

Lighting a room (or an entire home) is almost an art form in itself, and adding something like colour-change classic bulbs can completely change the look and feel of a room without it being permanent. These smart bulbs are just that - smart. The colour and brightness options can be remotely controlled, integrating with popular voice-activated systems or apps available on smartphones.
